Albert Garrett & the Bad Romantics

Amazingly Talented Albert Garrett

Coming Up Magazine had a chance to sit in recently on a very up-close and personal set with Albert Garrett, singer and guitarist of the awesome band, the Bad Romantics.

The venue, a dive bar in the Valley, was small and poorly lit and stunk of warm beer and cheap cigarettes, but we were amazed with how talented Garrett was as he played solo his electric guitar and went through what we felt were some of the best new romantic ballads we ever caught live and nearly un-plugged.

Armed with a laid back sexy singing style all of his own, Albert was incredible and demonstrated to us a profound knack of swooning and song writing that had us Googling to learn more about him and his story between each of his songs.

The Bad Romantics

Bad Romantics is the brainchild of singer/songwriter Albert Garrett, drummer Jonny Udell, bassist Jeffrey Covey, and guitarist Ryan Harris. Based out of Los Angeles, the combined credits and history of the band are quite staggering.. Garrett’s work as a songwriter includes Bruno Mars’ ‘Talking to the moon’, Cobra Starship’s ‘Fool like me’, stints as a session player for Matt Sorum (of Guns n’ Roses and the Cult) and many others. His work has been licensed for use by multiple Television shows, including the X Factor, American Idol, Access Hollywood, and So you think you can dance. Udell, Covey and Harris also have a long list of projects and accomplishments, including LA underground powerhouses Warner Drive, The Knives, Vayden, and Cherry Monroe. Combined the Bad Romantics have played thousands of live shows with bands the likes of Jet, CKY, Fuel and many more.

Late 2012 Saw the release of their 1st EP, Albert Garrett & the Bad Romantics ‘Love at First Sight’, which garnered a front page feature on iTunes and attracted spins from Butterflies Radio, KYHY 92.5 FM The Wave, 91X San Diego, 98KUPD in Phoenix AZ, and WMPG in Portland ME. 2013 Saw the release of two stripped back solo releases by Garrett: ‘Marylou’ and ‘Think of You’, both again featured by iTunes on their front page during their prospective release dates. In early 2014 the full band returned to the studio with producer Jason Achilles Mezilis, (who’s credits include Chris Wyse from the Cult’s band OWL, Black Belt Karate, among many others) to work on their next single ‘Falling’.

Co produced by Mezilis and Garrett, and mixed/mastered by Chad Ginsburg of CKY, ‘Falling’ is the first taste of Bad Romantics 2nd EP, ‘Sorry not sorry’ slated for a late 2014 release. Featuring a powerfully addictive rhythmic backbone, coupled with a 50’s doowop vibe, the song merges Bad Romantic’s signature power pop sound ala the Wallflowers or Fastball with more modern undertones somewhat reminiscent of Radiohead, Arcade Fire and Imagine Dragons. Topped off with Garrett’s gravelly Dylan-esque vocals, layers of intricate guitars, and back up vocals, ‘Falling’ manages to reel the listener in with a classy musical distinction all it’s own.

We hear The Bad Romantics are playing the Viper Room in April.
