After we all wanted to take care of bad blood and say hello, one of the most addicting things to come out of music in 2015 was Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” We can’t decide if it was because of the awkward dad dancing in the video, or the actual song – but we played it over and over again. So when a song like that comes along, you have to expect a cascade of covers to start popping up. While we love watching pugs dance to in on Vine, and seeing the Elf on a Shelf to his thing, we couldn’t help but shine a brighter light on LA’s own KINGDOMS and their rendition.
An electropop band making their presence known in the City of Angels thanks in part to what they can do on a stage, KINGDOMS decided they were going to close out 2015 by doing a cover of one of the best of the year. Thus, “Hotline Bling” their way was born. Already a pretty relaxed song, KINGDOMS didn’t really mess with that aspect but what they did add to make it theirs was give it more of a pop feel by adding some harmonies here and there, and using a good dose of synth throughout. You can also hear more soul in their delivery.
This is what KINGDOMS has going on to cap their year, so we’ll have to stay tuned to see what they have in store come 2016. We’ll be keeping tabs on these guys!
